We live in the world we broke

My new motto for life is “You will love what you invest in; and you will invest in what you love.” I promise you, you invest the time and effort into this obscure little ancient book of Joel, you will come to love it. So let’s roll up our sleeves and get dirty here.

One of my favorite books of all time is “The Gift of Magi” by O.Henry. Remember it? A young poor couple want to give each other the best gift ever for Christmas. So she sacrifices her most treasured possession, her hair, cuts it and sells it to get a chain for his most prized possession--his grandfather’s pocket watch. The ending is a twist that makes everything so wrong and yet so perfectly right. You’ve got to read it for yourself.

Anyways, O.Henry was known for his surprise twist endings like that. Someone reportedly asked him how he wrote. He said he’d write the endings first, and then wrote the story up to it.

I hope as you started to look at Joel this week, and your Old Testament survey, you saw a glimpse into the heart of God and was reassured of his plans. He wrote the ending first, and now is letting the story unfold up to it. Make no mistake--He didn’t start wringing his hands when he found out Eve bit into that old apple. He didn’t wonder what He was going to do.

No, the God of time--who is not bound by time, who is the beginning and the end, who was and is and is to come--He saw the end when he started the beginning. He knew before he pulled the dust together into the shape of a man. He saw Eve take that bite. He saw children sacrificed in fires to appease demons. He saw the shooter at Ft. Hood, the killing fields of Cambodia; the gassed trenches of Europe. He saw his very own son agonizing on a cross. As he breathed into that lump of clay, he said it is worth it. He said Laura, Tiffany, Emily is worth all the pain and suffering. Certainly not for our own merits. But just because He loves us. And the good we will do--through Jesus--that will outweigh the bad.

So with this plan from the very beginning, He breathed life into Adam. And the story of man began. Repeatedly, when things were going good--oh friends, hear me--when things were going good, our hearts would wander from our God. He would allow hard times. He would send punishment. But always with a way out. Always, He would plead, ‘But if you will only repent, I will save.’

We live in a broken world. We’re the ones who broke it. And that broken world is hell-bent on destroying itself with Satan driving it there. At this time, God allows those natural outcomes of sin to bring hard times. Yes, sometimes, the Bible says He even sends those hard times.

Sometimes He allows the trouble. Sometimes He sends it. Always. Always, He uses it for our good.

So we see humanity vacillating for generations, deciding who they will serve, and seeing the consequences of that choice. It’s frustrating to watch, isn’t it? Over and over, God sends his Holy Spirit to people to be witnesses to the people. And so we come to the prophets.

You know those kids’ books “You wouldn’t want to be a roman gladiator?” It’s a whole series of funny, cartoon books that show the hard times of history. You wouldn’t want to be a pilgrim. You wouldn’t want to be a settler. You wouldn’t want to be a mother of toddlers. They should write that one. Well, there also should be one called ‘You wouldn’t want to be a prophet of God.’

The prophets of God gave their entire life to His disposal. Gave up every ‘right’ they had to their lives. Get swallowed by a whale. Preach naked. Lay on one side in the town square for a year. Marry a prostitute and call your children unloved and rejected.

That’s just the things God told them to do. Then there was the reaction of the people. Prophets were probably the ones who started the saying ‘don’t kill the messenger.’ Over and over again, they were killed. Beaten. Exiled. Thrown into a well while a war went on overhead.

And they said He is worth it.
We seem to think our reward should be in this lifetime. Yes, the American Christian culture--like no other culture--thinks it can achieve it’s mansion and peace and rest that heaven promises, now. Here on this earth. It makes us the poorest in spirit in the world.

Joel was one of God’s prophets. We call him a minor prophet, only because of the length. At the end of the Old Testament we have 12 minor prophets’ books, not in chronological order.

In Joel, we see such mystery. God has not given us a time for when the prophet lived. Through this book we get a glimpse into how the God of time sees the world--the past, the present, the future at once. We know some of the things have already happened, and some are yet to come.

Because there’s no mention of any king or armies, many scholars think Joel could have lived around the time of King Joash, the child king. Let’s back up his story a little bit. From the glory of King David and the untold riches of his son King Solomon--in one generation we fall to the kingdom divided, the wealth vanishing. In just over a hundred years from those great men, we end up with Queen Jezebel ruling the Northern kingdom. To this day, the woman’s name is equated with evil.

Well, in the southern kingdom, on David’s throne was her counterpart, Athaliah. Both of them had their husbands die. Both of them had their idiot sons ruling. God said enough of Jezebel. He raised up a commander of the army to deal with her.

Army wives: pay attention. God understands the heart of a warrior. He remembers their names and their deeds repeatedly, preserved for eternity in the Book.

So Jehu kills Jezebel, her son, all their relatives, and since Queen Athaliah’s son was hanging around, he got it too.

You know when the men are gone...

Athaliah had a choice. We all do. When faced with hard times, we can shake our fist at God, or we can continue to trust Him. Let’s remember Habakkuk’s response in 3:17-19.

Athaliah has seen the outcome of the wicked. God gives her the opportunity to repent. Every day is an opportunity to repent for all of us. Instead of falling to her knees, bowing her back and her will to the Lord God Almighty, she stiffened her back. She set her jaw. She raised her fist.

Her first order of business was to kill off all potential kings. What’s a few blobs of potential flesh when you’re establishing your career of controlling the world? These were her grandchildren. She put them to the sword.

But even as she set about to control her world, another royal woman risked her own life to obey God. She took off with a yearling, and hid him in God’s house. Her husband, the high priest Jehoiada sheltered the boy and his nurse for 6 years.

When Joash turned 7, High priest Jehoiada armed the guards. (Again, notice the details God tells us of the warriors.) He brought the boy out and crowned him. When Queen Athaliah heard the noise of the crowds, she rushed out and was killed.

Hooray! Victory! Happy ever after, right? Jehoiada and Joash restore the temple. The country is at peace. Sadly, there’s a clause in there “Joash served the Lord as long as Jehoiada lived.”

The old saying is true, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. We can raise moral pagans. We can drag them to church every time the doors open. We can make them stand at attention during worship. We can pound a hundred Bible verses into their brains. But the day will come when they will have to decide, ‘will I repent’?

Veggie Tales

Phil Vischer--Veggie Tales Creator--said this:

"I looked back at the previous 10 years and realized I had spent 10 years trying to convince kids to behave Christianly without actually teaching them Christianity. And that was a pretty serious conviction. You can say, "Hey kids, be more forgiving because the Bible says so," or "Hey kids, be more kind because the Bible says so!" But that isn't Christianity, it's morality. . .
And that was such a huge shift for me from the American Christian ideal. We're drinking a cocktail that's a mix of the Protestant work ethic, the American dream, and the gospel. And we've intertwined them so completely that we can't tell them apart anymore. Our gospel has become a gospel of following your dreams and being good so God will make all your dreams come true. It's the Oprah god.”

I am convicted by that. Do I teach obey the rules because that makes life easy for me, or do I teach    love    the     Lord     your     God.     We absolutely have to lead the horse to water. That is our job. But we can only show them how to drink from that well. The Holy Spirit convicts. And they must decide to love the Lord their God.

Andy Stanley said, “Our greatest contribution is not what we do, but who we raise.” Another old saying I know you know--the hand that rocks the cradle is also true. Yes, it means a sacrifice of your very life. Your time. Your energy. I know the days are long. So long. But the years are very, very short. Your children are not an interruption to your life, your ministry. They are your ministry.

When King Joash was left without his beloved priest, he had to decide for himself. He chose poorly. And when God sent prophets, pleading with him to turn back to his heavenly Father, Joash stiffened his back. He set his jaw. He raised his fist and said ‘You can’t control me.”

Perhaps Joel was one of those prophets sent. When Priest Jehoiada’s own son came before King Joash, the king had him killed. Because that’s what you have to do. You have to kill the messenger of God. Skip that Bible time. Turn off the praise music. Stop going to church. Don’t hang out with those people.

Again, we don’t know for sure when Joel gave his message. But we see in it God’s plan from the beginning. Love. Repent. A life with God, freely chosen, is worth the pain.

As man’s wickedness continues, more punishment will come. How will we get through these?

The Hidden Place

In Holland, in a little clock shop, a girl asked her father this very question. As an older woman, she was reminded of his answer again and again. Corrie and her sister were in their fifties, living with their elderly father and working in his watch repair shop. At a time when they should have been enjoying their golden years, retiring, kicking back, what seemed like the end of the world was breaking all around them. It was driven by an anti-Christ, Hitler. In the face of an army with the power to conquer the world, they chose to enlist in the Heavenly Army. They hid Jews. And they were punished for it.

How will I have the faith to stay strong through the trials? Corrie had asked her father. Remember when you were a little girl, and we would go on the train? Her father explained. When did I give you your ticket? Right when you needed it. So will God give you the faith you need, my child.

Much of God’s plan for the future, which we see only a little bit of in Joel, is shrouded in mystery. We don’t know the times. But a soldier who doesn’t know his orders stays close to his commander, right? And a girl who needs a ticket holds her father’s hand. And we must teach our children to do so, as the days are evil.

As we dive deeper into Joel these next couple of weeks:

Be open to the mystery. No easy answers. No pat verses. Nothing we can control.
Be in awe of the God of all ages. Learn to trust Him more.
And pray for a deeper love for the One who said you are worth it.

This is us

Esther Generation (From IF:Gathering)

They say you should travel light
But most of our lives we carry it all on our backs
These days it isn’t our arms that stay weighed down
It’s our minds
We wake up in a panic
Its our thoughts that hyperventilate for fear
Of making mistakes.

For fear of failing or succeeding
Or fear that we’ll never move past our past
That we’ll be exactly who they said we’d be
That we’ll never be more than what was done to us
That we will continue to be taken advantage of
That we should accept shame as a companion to carry with us
That we should let the lies befriend us

The lies
started in a garden
Spoken slyly by a slithering serpent with his syrupy sweet: “Did God really say?”

And we’ve be doubting ever since

Allowing an unwelcome guest to make himself at home in our lives, minds, gardens
Keep us bound with slithering fear
that we are damaged goods

Never going to be good enough
Not enough brains, not enough brawn
Not enough guts to take anything on.

But there is no time for being soft or weak
That at all times we have to be tough
That We’ll never be perfect that
We’ll never be worth it
That we’ll never be enough
And sometimes we feel God calling us, nudging us
Trying to show us

but somehow we stay trapped
Behind walls of unbelief and unforgiveness
Our arm’s a weary rope caught in a vicious tension
Tug of war between our fear and our calling
Between worry and peace
Comfort and inconvenience
Comparing ourselves to each other
While battling low self esteem

Do we do what’s practical?
Or follow our dreams?
Do we take care of ourselves?
Or meet others people’s needs?
Should we fight?
Should we please?
Should we hide from who we are to put other people at ease?

And then the lies begin to echo and amplify
Loser
Time abuser
Mess producer
Who needs you?
She’s so much better
Just look at her
You actually thought that was a good idea?

Open your mouth and they’ll laugh long enough that you’ll shut your mouth
You aren’t smart enough
You aren’t good enough
You aren’t sharp enough

Who do you think you are?

Fear is our chain and it’s rattling us hard
It’s the poison that deadens our hearts

Fear of failing
Fear of flailing
Fear of the arrows
Fear of the way named narrow
Fear of the shear rock in front of you that begs you sweat and climb
Climb out of that drug dead comforting pit they call status quo
And break right up through the earth and into the life you were born for

In the now of your life while there is still time and hunger in your veins
Turn around and shake off that snake
Because it’s head’s been crushed, no pulverized
So let go of the lie.

Sometimes we imagine that God’s voice is a disappointed hard lined teacher
Who is waiting to whack our knuckles with a ruler for any imperfections

But that isn’t God’s voice at all

That isn’t Gods heart at all

He speaks tenderly
He doesn’t need to raise his voice
He speaks as if He’s right next to us

Because He’s right next to us

Because He goes before us

Because His spirit lives inside us

He starts with love
And not because He is a hopeless romantic
But mostly because

He is ALL LOVE and HOPE and SECOND CHANCES

Let go of the fanged lie and bind the wound with dressings of Truth that will heal your bloodied soul
Take that sharp edge of His Word and hack that snake creeping up the back your neck
The words
The only life hack that will hack off the lie of the snake and make your life whole

We fear that the place we think God’s love will run out or dry up

We fear that place where we think God’s love will run out, dry up, fall of the edge
And we’ll be left dangling beyond its reach

We fear that somewhere God’s love ends

But His love never runs out

His steadfast love surpasses suburbia
Canvases from skyscrapers to street corners from porch to stoop

His love is looking for you.

Who would you be?
What would you do?

If you weren’t afraid

Could be that you’ve always wanted to come up through the ground
in some desolate place that needed a tree
To bear some fruit for someone with their tongue stuck to the dry roof of their parched mouth
To be a limb that held some baby abandoned
To be a limb that someone could used to swing over the fence and free

We were made from dust
A bit of earth kissed by heaven
made to be groundbreakers
And peacemakers
And freedom shakers

So you can take your glossy Vogue covers and use them for washing windows
Because we’ve always thought the most beautiful women have dirt under their fingernails
And could shake a bit of the very earth out of their warn and pioneering shoes

And lets redefine comfort zone because wherever He takes you
You are with the comforter
Wherever He calls you
You are always in his comfort zone

So live all your present moments in His presence
To keep company with Christ
To get in on the best

There’s a whole Esther generation right here and now and it is us.

Who come broken
Who are done being defeated by fear and worry and stress
Because it advertises the unreliability of God

Who want hard and Holy things because we want more than hallow lives
A life more than self focus and cell phones
More than iPhones, iTunes and iLove
Who want a life of loving the least, the lonely, and the lost
There is a whole Esther generation rising right here and now and it is us

Who are done with easy
Who know that being like Christ and caring for the poor in body and soul
Means more than just caring about easing our consciences
It means living real sacrifice

There is a whole Esther generation rising right here and now and it is us

Who say now is the time for the faith brave
To sky dive and fly
To remember that we don’t have to strive to be anyone
To stop taking issue with what God made
To accept that our perfect God makes no mistakes

There’s a whole Esther generation rising right here and now and it is us

To take the weight we carry on our backs
And offer it back to the savior who already carried the weight of the world on his shoulders
Who surrender
Who lay out alabaster hopes and dreams at the feet of our Savior

There is a whole Esther generation rising right here and now and it is us

Who will no longer look for peace in opinions
But to find our solid ground in the truth

There are many tomorrows to face
But today, lets open our hearts and our wounds and our stories
To the great story teller
That our lives may be chiseled by His pen

That we may
BELIEVE
and LOVE
and PRAY
and FIGHT
and REST
and LIVE!

I can do all things.....

When the end of the school year comes I breathe a sigh of relief..... No more getting up super early, packing lunches, making sure all the homework is done, staying on track with projects and field trips. The list goes on and on and on......

I crave the summer days when the schedule is more relaxed and consist of getting up and seeing what the day has to offer.

On my run this morning I finished with Matthew West's song "Strong Enough". In the song he explains how he knows that he is not strong enough but that he can do all things through Christ.
At the end of the school year I know that I am not strong enough and yet I feel overwhelmed and tired. Can I really do all things through HIM?

Then it dawned on me that I can do all things that God wants me to do. He will give me the strength to day to face what He needs me to face.

I do pray over my to do list (sometimes) but I rarely ask God to prioritize things for me. What does He want me to do today.

I can do all things {insert all things that God needs me to do, that are in His will}.

If you are feeling stressed and stretched out and running on empty, ask yourself the one thing that you are doing that is not within His will. Sometimes it is something simple like not doing ALL the laundry at once or plan a fancy meal on a soccer nights.

Slow down. Breathe. Smell the roses.

You will soon realize that you can do ALL THINGS that matter through HIM!

"See" like a cat

Did you know that of all the senses, a cat's hearing is its sharpest. Felines can perceive the slightest noise and accurately judge where it's coming from. In a way a cat sees better with its ears than its eyes.

You have also probably heard that you should not believe everything you see. Well cats do not, they believe what they hear.

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ. Romans 10:17

With tragedies happening at our doorsteps and images of those tragedies replaying on TV screens and newspaper it would be easy to believe that this world is in chaos. Yet God promised us that he would never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

When you see other people pass you for promotions because they spread rumors and make themselves look better, it would be easy to lose heart. But God says that he will avenge us (Romans 12:19).

There are two ways to live in this world. You can go by what you see or you can trust God’s promises.

Faith comes by hearing.

Do you hear Him? He speaks to you daily. Be attentive. Be still (like a cat) and listen. See with your ears. Trust what He is telling you.

Let the temporary pains, disappointments and chaos fade away. Know that if God is for you, then who should you fear.

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18

When God uses nature to reinforce His teaching

“And at a time where the senses are on fire, it is impossible toembrace the beauty without believing embracing God!” Victor Hugo

Depending on which part of the country (or the world) you live in, you might be able to experience the marvelous beauty of fall. I love fall and I am very happy to be in the North Country where the colors are amazing.

Last year at about the same time we were in Kansas and Canadian geese would flock to Ft Leavenworth and take over the golf course for the winter. Here at Fort Drum, we have seen the geese fly south as the temperature has been dropping. I have been reading on those fascinating animals and here are some interesting facts about them.

  • Fact: As each goose flaps its wings it creates an "uplift" for the birds that follow. By flying in a V-formation, the whole flock adds 72% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone. When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

LessonChrist made it clear that we are not our own anymore and that we are there to support each other. A morning with fellow Christians or church is uplifting because we are encouraged by another body of believers. We are all behind Christ and follow his lead. Only then can we feel the uplift and greater flying range. I am guilty on more days that I care to account for trying to do it on my own. I pray that you will all stay in formation with me and feel the uplift!

Psalm 18:32“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.”

Isaiah 40:31but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

  • Fact:When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position.

Lesson: It pays to take turns going the hard tasks and sharing leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each other's skills, capabilities, and unique arrangements of gifts, talents, and resources.

They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

  • Fact: The geese flying formation honk to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Lesson: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is greater. The power of encouragement (to stand by one's heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek.

Romans 12:8
if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

  • Fact: When a goose gets sick, wounded, or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

Lesson: If we had as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
